Habit & Habitat:
A common spiny shrub, up to 4m tall, found in sub-tropical and temperate zones.
Plant Description:
Leaves simple, opposite, elliptic, oblanceolate-obtuse, exstipulate. Flower solitary, showy, scarlet, red-orange, 3cm long. Calyx 20-35mm long, reddish, succulent. Petals obovate, wrinkled, alternating with sepals lobes. Fruit subglobose with leathery skin, crowned with persistent calyx lobes, pale red to scarlet or brownish. Seed juicy, red or pink, angular, fleshy, juicy.
Flowering and Fruiting:
April-June.
Harvesting Time:
May-October.
Medicinal Value:
Rind is used to treat dysentery and root bark to combat tape worm.[5] Locally fruit bark is used as stomach cooler, removes acidity. Root bark is used as worm killer.
